WHAT HAPPENED IN THE CHIQUITANO FOREST AND THE AMAZON IN 2019
The Chiquitano dry forest is the ecosystem which connects South America’s two largest biomes, the Amazon and the Gran Chaco- a dense dry forest that extends south into Paraguay and Brazil.
From July to September of 2019, thousands of untamable fires (up to 6th generation) swept through the Chiquitano forest and the Bolivian Amazonia consuming approximately 5 million Ha (172% increase of burned surface compared to previous years) and killing an estimated 2 million animals from 500 native species. This horrendous experience was a result of the increase in land use for livestock, and irresponsible forest and trash burning practices that demonstrated how unprepared we are to deal with natural disasters.
Indigenous Chiquitano communities lost up to 98% of the forest that provided them with income and work through the sustainable harvest of copaiba oil, as well as their personal survival crops.
